Wenchi Crater Lake

Wenchi Lake is a beautiful volcanic crater lake often referred to as the “Switzerland of Africa.” It is surrounded by natural forests, hot springs, waterfalls, and traditional villages that make it one of Ethiopia’s most scenic destinations. There are two main roads to reach Wenchi from Addis Ababa: via Weliso or via Ambo. Wenchi Lake is located about 155 km from Addis Ababa, 38 km from Woliso, and 28 km from Ambo, with both routes taking a similar amount of travel time.

With fewer than 50 volcanic crater lakes in the world, Ethiopia is home to about five of them, including Lake Wenchi. The lake lies at an altitude of approximately 2,600 meters above sea level. Due to its environmental conditions, the lake does not support fish, which helps keep the water exceptionally clean and free from odor. It is often considered one of the cleanest lakes in Africa after Lake Tanganyika.

The area attracts travelers with its spectacular landscapes, including mineral springs, sulfur-rich swamps, hot springs, boiling water fountains, salty rocks, and the warm hospitality of the local people.

To reach the lake itself, visitors usually take a 3–4 hour round-trip hike. Horses can also be rented from the local community. Boat rides and local guide services are also available. These tourism services are organized through the local community tourism office.

Wenchi Village and the Local Community

Around the lake lies the village of Wenchi, while local residents refer to the lake as Haro Wenchi. The village is home to around 4,000 people, mainly from the Oromo, Gurage, and Amhara ethnic groups. About 99% of the population follows Christianity.

The local community earns its livelihood through tourism, farming, animal husbandry, and beekeeping. Their honey is even exported to Italy. The main agricultural products in the area include enset (false banana), white barley, and black barley.

More than 7,500 tourists visit Lake Wenchi each year, with an average of around 20 visitors per day.

Community Tourism at Lake Wenchi

Lake Wenchi has gained international recognition as one of the best tourist villages in the world. During the 24th General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization (WTO), held in Madrid, Spain, Lake Wenchi was awarded the title of “Best Tourist Village of 2021.” The award ceremony took place on December 2, 2021. The Oromia Regional State Ministry of Culture and Tourism played a major role in supporting and promoting Wenchi’s participation in the competition.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, the award recognized the strong hospitality of the local community, their dedication to environmental conservation, and the area’s unique natural and cultural heritage. This achievement is expected to encourage the development of sustainable tourism across Ethiopia and serve as a model for other tourism destinations.

Lake Wenchi is also included in the “Dine for the Nation” initiative launched by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The project aims to strengthen ecotourism, improve infrastructure, and support local livelihoods in the region.

Community-based tourism at Wenchi has also benefited from development cooperation programs, including support linked to German technical cooperation (GTZ, now GIZ). These initiatives have contributed to improving local tourism management, increasing community participation, and promoting the sustainable use of natural resources. As a result, Wenchi has grown into one of Ethiopia’s best-organized ecotourism destinations.
