Visa and documents required to enter Ethiopia
Any foreigner who plans to enter Ethiopia must hold a passport or travel document valid for not less than 6 months. You will also need to obtain and present one of the following visa types.
– A printed copy of the approved electronic visa,
– Visa on arrival, at the airport
– Regular visas from the Ethiopian embassy and missionaries.
Note: The visa on arrival and e-visa is only applicable to people arriving at Addis Ababa Airport. If you want to enter Ethiopia by land or at any other airport, you must obtain a regular visa from the Ethiopian embassy or missionary before traveling.
Normal Tourist Visa from Embassy
Tourist visas and business visas can be obtained in person from the Ethiopian embassy and missionaries. The required documents include travel documents, passport-sized photos, original passports, and copies. Fill out the visa application form and pay the visa fee to the visa office.

Ethiopian Visa application By Post
You can send your Ethiopian visa application to the Ethiopian Embassy by mail or courier service and process the visa. This only applies to some Ethiopian embassies or consulates. You must attach the required documents and proof of payment to the visa application form.
The application must be submitted in extra time before the scheduled entry date into Ethiopia, and the time required your Documents to arrive process and send the documents.
How to Extend Your Ethiopian Visa
If you want to stay in Ethiopia for longer than your initial 30-day visa allows, you must apply for an extension before it expires. The process depends on how close you are to your visa’s expiration date.
- For visas expiring in 1-15 days, you can apply for an extension online.
- For visas expiring in more than 15 days, you must apply in person at the Immigration and Citizenship Service headquarters.
The main office is located near Churchill Road in Addis Ababa. Remember to apply in person at least five days before your visa expires.
If you overstay your visa without getting an extension, you will face fines and other legal penalties. The visa extension fee is between 102 and 105 USD.
