Itinerary

Day 1: Drive from Gondar to Simien Mountains National Park

In the morning after breakfast, drive from Gondar to the Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO-listed world natural heritage site. On the way, stop in Debark (2,800 m) to collect the guide, cook, scouts, permits, and pay the necessary park fees at the office.

Here, you will gather all essential items for the next days of trekking. Continue driving into the park. The Simien Mountains rise above 3,000 m, so trekkers often need to acclimatize to the high altitude on the first day.

Start a short 2–3 hour trek to Sankaber Campsite (3,200 m), offering stunning views over valleys and mountain ranges, and the chance to see endemic Gelada baboon troops. Arrive and relax at Sankaber.

Day 2: Trek Sankaber – Geech

After breakfast, begin your trek through Erica heather forest, covered with white lichen and moss that resembles an old man’s beard.

Trek from Sankaber (3,200 m) to Geech (3,600 m), about 2–3 hours. Continue to the seasonal Jinbar Waterfall / Imet Gogo viewpoint area, a dramatic 500-meter-deep drop (may have little or no water in dry season).

Watch for the rare and elegant lammergeyer (bearded vulture) soaring overhead. Enjoy a picnic lunch by the river, then continue trekking through spectacular Simien Mountain scenery for another 2–3 hours to Geech village.

Day 3: Trek Geech – Imet Gogo – Gondar

Early morning after breakfast, leave Geech campsite and trek toward Chenek via one of the most scenic routes in the park.

After 7–8 hours of trekking, reach Imet Gogo Viewpoint (3,926 m), offering breathtaking 360-degree panoramic views over valleys, canyons, and mountain ranges.

Continue trekking to Ayna Meda, where your vehicle will be waiting for pickup. Drive back to Gondar through the scenic Simien Mountains, passing Debark town.

Day 4: Fly Gondar – Lalibela

Morning flight to Lalibela. Upon arrival, meet your driver or guide and check in to your hotel.

Begin visiting the famous rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring 11 unique churches carved from solid rock. The most iconic is St. George Church, shaped like a cross.

Day 5: Fly Lalibela – Axum

Fly to Axum, the ancient capital of Ethiopia. Visit the Tombs of the Kings of Axum and the famous towering Axum Stelae, symbols of the great Axumite Civilization.

Day 6: Drive Axum – Gehralta

Drive from Axum to Gehralta. Although Lalibela’s churches are the most famous, the rock-hewn churches of Tigray (Gehralta) are equally impressive.

Visit the spectacular Abune Yemata Guh Church, reached by climbing an 8-meter cliff, offering one of the most dramatic church settings in the world.

Day 7: Gehralta – Mekelle – Addis Ababa

Enjoy the stunning morning views of Gehralta Mountains. Trek to St. Maryam Korkor Church (6th century rock-hewn church).

Afterwards, drive to Mekelle Airport and fly back to Addis Ababa.

Day 8: Mekelle – Danakil Depression – Erta Ale Volcano

Pick up from your hotel and join a group for a journey to the Danakil Depression.

Drive from Mekelle to Dodom, the starting point of the Erta Ale expedition. From Dodom Base Camp, trek for about 3 hours to Erta Ale Volcano, home to one of the world’s only permanent lava lakes.

Enjoy a spectacular night view of glowing lava and volcanic activity.

Day 9: Erta Ale – HamadEla

Early morning descent from Erta Ale back to Dodom, then drive to HamadEla (100 km). Along the way, observe camel caravans crossing the desert.

Enjoy a beautiful sunset at Lake Assale.

Day 10: HamadEla – Dallol – Mekelle – Addis Ababa

Morning drive to Ragad (Asebo) to observe traditional salt mining. Continue to Dallol, famous for its surreal volcanic landscapes resembling Mars or the Moon.

Return to Mekelle Airport and fly back to Addis Ababa.
