Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Fly Addis Ababa to Jinka

Fly from Addis Ababa to Jinka. Upon arrival, meet our team and check in to your hotel. On this day, we will visit the villages of the Ari tribe. These villages are surrounded by lush countryside, providing a sharp contrast to other parts of the Omo Valley. Walk through the farmlands, visit craftsmen, and see how the Ari live. If it is a market day, we will visit the local market.

Overnight: Jinka

Day 2: Jinka – Mago National Park – Turmi

We drive through Mago National Park to meet the Mursi, who are considered fearless warriors. They are recognized by their women’s iconic lip plates; the larger the plate, the more beautiful a Mursi woman is considered. Upon arrival, walk among the small huts, see how the Mursi cook, and take photos with tribal members. Afterward, drive to Turmi via Jinka. The Hamer live around their capital, Turmi, a small settlement that becomes busy on market days. The Hamer are famous for their spectacular hairstyles and the “bull jumping” ceremony, a vital rite of passage for Hamer boys.

Day 3: Turmi – Omorate – Turmi

In the morning, we drive to Omorate to visit the Dasenech tribe. These tribes settle around the Omo River, and we will cross to the other bank in a traditional boat. The Dasenech are highly breeding-oriented, where cattle and goats serve as signs of status and dowry. In the afternoon, return to Turmi. If it is Monday, we will attend the vibrant tribal market.

Day 4: Turmi – Karo – Turmi

Morning drive to Korcho, a village of the Karo tribe set on a cliff overlooking the Omo River. The Karo are referred to as the best body painters among the tribes of the Omo Valley, using colorful clay soils. Later, take a walk in a Hamer village and perhaps join a family for traditional coffee. We may also visit the local market in Turmi, where many tribes come to buy and sell, and enjoy a drink at a local establishment.

Day 5: Turmi – Konso – Arba Minch

After breakfast, drive to Arba Minch via Konso. We meet the Konso people in their hilltop villages, fortified by several rounds of stone walls. UNESCO recorded the Konso village as a World Heritage site for its impressive soil conservation and terracing. Afterward, continue the drive to Arba Minch.

Day 6: Arba Minch – Dorze – Fly Addis Ababa

In the morning, drive to the village of the Dorze, considered the finest weavers in Ethiopia. We will see how they produce handmade cotton cloth using the “Shemane” tradition. Walk through the green farmlands to see the elephant-shaped houses, learn how they prepare food from the false banana tree, and enjoy their music and dance. Later, transfer to Arba Minch airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa.

Day 7: Fly Addis Ababa to Lalibela

Fly to Lalibela to visit the 11 rock-hewn churches. These unique structures were carved from a single rock in the 12th century by King Lalibela and remain one of the most important sacred sites in the world.

Day 8: Fly Lalibela to Axum

Fly to Axum, the former capital of Ethiopia. Visit the tombs of the Axumite kings and the towering stelae that stand graciously to showcase the ancient Axumite civilization.

Day 9: Drive Axum to Gheralta

Drive from Axum to Gheralta. While the churches of Lalibela are famous, the rock-hewn churches of North Tigray are equally beautiful. Visit the stunning Abune Yemata Guh church by climbing an 8-meter cliff for a truly spiritual experience.

Overnight: Gheralta

Day 10: Gheralta – Mekele – Fly Addis Ababa

Enjoy the stunning views of the Gheralta mountains in the morning before trekking to Maryam Korkor, a rock-hewn church dating back to the 6th century. Afterwards, drive to Mekele airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa.
