Day 1: Fly Addis Ababa – Jinka

Fly from Addis Ababa to Jinka. Upon arrival, meet our team and check in to your hotel. On this day, we will visit the villages of the Ari tribe. Their villages are surrounded by lush countryside, which is a sharp contrast to other parts of the Omo Valley tribal areas. Walk through the farmlands, go house to house, visit craftsmen, and see how the Ari live. If it is a market day, visit the local market.

Overnight: Jinka

Day 2: Jinka – Turmi

Drive through Mago National Park to meet the Mursi. The Mursi people are considered fearless warriors. They are mostly recognized for their women’s iconic lip plates—the bigger the lip plate, the more beautiful a Mursi woman is considered. Upon arrival in the village, walk around the small huts of different Mursi families, see how they cook, and take photos with tribal members.

Afterwards, drive to Turmi via Jinka. The Hamer live around their capital, Turmi, a small settlement that can be busy on market days. The Hamer people make a living from herding and agriculture. They live in small villages and follow a largely traditional lifestyle. The Hamer are famous for their spectacular women’s hairstyles. Hamer boys must pass through a rite of passage to become adults. The ceremony is called “bull jumping.” It is an impressive cultural event and an important milestone in the life of a Hamer family.

Overnight: Turmi

Day 3: Turmi – Omorate – Turmi

In the morning, drive to Omorate town to visit the Dassanech tribe. The Dassanech people live around the Omo River. To reach their village, we will cross to the other bank of the river using a traditional boat.

The Dassanech, like other Omo Valley tribes, are constantly adapting to their changing environment. They grow sorghum, maize, and beans, and are highly livestock-oriented. Cattle and goats provide milk and meat, especially during the dry season when crops are scarce. Livestock is also a sign of status and used as dowry for marriages. They have a history of conflict, often related to cattle raids with neighboring groups.

In the afternoon, drive back to Turmi. If it is Monday, attend the local tribal market in Turmi.

Overnight: Turmi

Day 4: Turmi – Karo – Turmi

In the morning, drive to Korcho, a village of the Karo tribe. The village is set on a cliff overlooking a scenic view of the Omo River. The Karo live in huts made of sticks with thatched roofs. Their most striking feature is their practice of body painting, using colorful clay soils. They are often considered the best body painters among the tribes of the Omo Valley.

Afterwards, return to Turmi. Visit a Hamer village and possibly join a family in their huts for a traditional coffee experience. You may also visit the local market, where different tribes gather to buy and sell goods, and enjoy local drinks.

Overnight: Turmi Lodge

Day 5: Turmi – Arbaminch (via Konso)

After breakfast, drive to Arbaminch via Konso. Visit the Konso people in their hilltop villages, fortified by several rounds of stone walls. The Konso are famous for their impressive soil conservation techniques, including terraced farming. UNESCO has recognized the Konso Cultural Landscape as a World Heritage Site.

Walk through the narrow village paths, designed with limited entrances for security. Afterwards, continue driving to Arbaminch.

Overnight: Arbaminch Hotel

Day 6: Arbaminch – Dorze – Fly Addis Ababa

In the morning, drive to the village of the Dorze, who are considered the finest weavers in Ethiopia. They produce high-quality handmade cotton cloth. You will see how the famous Shemma weaving is done—a time-honored tradition passed down through generations. These clothes are worn for special celebrations, weddings, funerals, and other important occasions.

You may also purchase high-quality traditional scarves and handmade items in the village. Walk through the green farmlands and see the unique elephant-shaped houses of the Dorze people. Learn how they prepare food from the false banana tree and enjoy their traditional music and dance.

After the visit, transfer to Arbaminch Airport for your flight back to Addis Ababa.
