Day 1 – Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar

Drive from Addis Ababa to Bahir Dar through the Sululta Plain, enjoying the scenic landscape of the Ethiopian highlands. This organized Ethiopia travel experience takes you from the Shewa region to the Gojam region.

Stop at Debre Libanos, where you will visit the Portuguese Bridge and view the Jemma Valley. Continue across the dramatic Blue Nile Gorge, comparable to the Grand Canyon, with a depth of more than 1,000 meters.

Day 2 – Bahir Dar (Lake Tana & Blue Nile Falls)

Early in the morning, after breakfast, walk to the port of Lake Tana for a boat trip to the monastery of Ura Kidane Mihret. Lake Tana, the source of the Blue Nile, offers fresh air, birdlife, hippos, and dozens of islands.

After arriving at the Zege Peninsula, take a 30-minute walk through forest and coffee plantations to reach the monastery, famous for its beautiful wall paintings and sacred manuscripts. On the lake, we will try to spot hippos.

After lunch, drive 30 km to the Blue Nile Falls. If it is not the rainy season, we will explore the town of Bahir Dar.

Day 3 – Gondar (Bahir Dar – Gondar)

After breakfast, drive to Gondar (about 4 hours) through beautiful countryside landscapes. This Ethiopia travel experience includes a city visit to the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), featuring castles built by Ethiopian emperors beginning in the 17th century.

After lunch, visit Debre Birhan Selassie Church (Trinity), famous for its religious paintings and iconic ceiling of angels. Continue to the Fasilides Bath (Swimming Pool) in the center of Gondar.

Day 4 – Simien Mountains Day Trip

Today, depart early for the Simien Mountains. Pass through Woleka (Felasha village), once home to Ethiopian Jews. At Debark, collect permits and meet your guide.

Explore Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Natural Site known for its dramatic landscapes, rare flora, and fauna. Enjoy a short trek along the escarpment with stunning valley views and sightings of Gelada baboons, endemic to Ethiopia.

After a picnic lunch, return to Gondar.

Day 5 – Lalibela

In the morning, fly to Lalibela. Visit the famous rock-hewn churches carved into solid rock in the 13th century by King Lalibela, who is considered a saint by Ethiopian Christians.

These 11 magnificent churches were created as a “New Jerusalem.” The most famous is the Church of St. George, known for its iconic cross shape. Lalibela is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a highlight of any Ethiopia travel itinerary.

Day 6 – Axum

After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your flight to Axum, the ancient capital of the Axumite Kingdom.

Axum is the holiest city for Ethiopian Christians. Visit the stelae field, archaeological museum, royal tombs, and the Church of St. Mary of Zion, believed to house the Ark of the Covenant.

Day 7 – Axum to Gheralta Mountains

In the morning, drive from Axum to the Gheralta Mountains through the picturesque landscapes of Tigray. While Lalibela’s churches are world-famous, the rock churches of northern Tigray are equally impressive.

On the way, make a side trip to Yeha Temple, a 2,500-year-old archaeological site and former religious center before Axum. A newer church stands nearby.

After lunch in Adwa, continue driving to the Gheralta Mountains.

Based on time, visit Abune Yemata Guh Church, one of the most inaccessible churches, often called the “church in the sky.” Dating back to the 6th century, it features remarkable wall paintings. Reaching it requires climbing an 8-meter rock face. The climb is challenging, but the views are unforgettable—an adventurous highlight of our Ethiopia travel and trips.

Day 8 – Gheralta Mountains

In the morning, after breakfast, explore the Gheralta mountain massif, searching for more hidden rock-hewn churches located on steep cliffs. Some require trekking and climbing, depending on your ability.

You may trek to Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor Churches, located at the top of the massif. The hike takes about 1.5 hours. These are among the largest and most beautiful churches in the region, offering stunning panoramic views.

Day 9 – Gheralta – Mekele – Addis Ababa

After a relaxed morning, depending on your flight schedule, drive to Mekele.

On the way, stop at Abreha we Atsbeha Church, one of the largest and most beautiful rock-hewn churches in Tigray, built in the 4th century by King Ezana and his brother.

Continue to Mekele and fly back to Addis Ababa, marking the end of your unforgettable Ethiopia holiday, vacation, and organized travel experience.
