Day 1: Mekele – Dodom – Erta Ale

The Danakil Depression is one of the most inhospitable places on Earth, located within the Great Rift Valley, where Africa is slowly splitting into three tectonic plates. These plates move in opposite directions while the central area gradually sinks, creating this unique geological formation.

On the first day, drive to Dodom Base Camp through a harsh landscape of solidified lava, rocks, and sand. The 4×4 journey covers about 70 km on one of the most difficult roads in the region. After arrival, rest until temperatures drop. Early dinner at 5:00 PM, then begin the trekking to Erta Ale Volcano. The ascent to the summit takes about 30 minutes, where you can witness the spectacular lava lake, a powerful natural phenomenon resembling the core of the Earth.

Note: The volcano has been active recently, so lava conditions may differ from online images.

Accommodation: Erta Ale – crater rim camping

Day 2: Erta Ale – Dodom – Hamedela

Early in the morning, before sunrise, descend on foot back to the base camp. After breakfast, continue driving to Hamedela. Day 3: Hamedela – Dallol – Mekele – Fly to Addis Ababa

Drive from Hamedela to Dallol, one of the lowest points below sea level, formed by the divergence of three tectonic plates. On the way, visit Lake Assale, where salt is mined, and observe camel caravans transporting salt blocks to the highlands. Walk across vast salt flats and explore colorful geothermal fields. Dallol is famous for its surreal, moon-like landscape with vivid yellow, green, blue, and orange tones created by sulfur, potassium, iron, and other minerals.

Return to Mekele and take a domestic flight to Addis Ababa.

Accommodation: Hotel in Addis Ababa

Day 4: Addis Ababa – Gondar – Simien Mountains

Fly from Addis Ababa to Gondar, then drive to the Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After preparing trekking equipment, continue to Sankaber Camp (3,200 m). Enjoy a short acclimatization hike of about 2 hours with spectacular escarpment views and chances to see Gelada baboons.
