Day 1: Mekele – Erta Ale Volcano
In the morning, we pick you up from the airport or your hotel. You will start the journey to Erta Ale Volcano by joining a group. The first part of the trip includes a 305 km drive to the base camp of the volcano. From the base camp to the volcano, there is a 3 to 4-hour walk. We begin the trek after sunset, when the temperature starts to cool.
As you approach the volcano, you will hear the roaring sound of eruptions and smell sulfur gas. Watching the flowing lava lake and witnessing the eruption of magma is one of the best lifetime experiences you can imagine.
Spend the night on the volcano.
Day 2: Erta Ale Volcano – Mekele
Early in the morning, we walk down from the volcano’s rim to the base camp at Dodom. Then, drive to Afdera, where you can swim in Lake Afrera and enjoy a bath in a natural hot spring. Afterward, drive back to Mekele.
Finally, fly to Addis Ababa, and then continue your journey home.
