Debre Libanos Jema Valley Day trip

on the way visit Debre libanos monstery , which is set to stands above a 700 M deep canyon, Debre Libanos was founded in 1284 by Abuna Tekle Haymanot, A renowned saint who was instrumental to the spread of Christianity in the southern part of Ethiopia. The original church didn’t survive the Muslim invaders In the 16^th c. Although The monastery has been destroyed several times it is still manage to be the biggest in the country. The founder St. Abune Tekle meditated for 29 years in the near bye cave out of this for the 7 years he prayed only with one his leg. The present church is fairly new and decorated with stainless glass work by the famous Ethiopian artist called Honorable metric artist Loret Afework Tekle.

Just on the east side of the monastery there an old bridge which is called Portuguese bridge , but believed to be built by an Ethiopian Governor of the region called Ras Darge. In rainy season it has an amazing waterfall. A short walk further in the bush to reach on a cliff which shows an amazing view of the Jema Valley. Maybe the 700 M deep Valley is the highlight of this tour.

To get there It needs 2 hrs. drive north of Addis Ababa, through on the beautiful Sululta plain or the Selale regions. This Highland part of Ethiopia is most famous for its milk supply to Addis Ababa. It has also has a scenic landscape of the countryside with a beautiful small villages sated in distance.
