Day 1: Drive to Danakil Depression – Hamed Ela

Meet at the airport or at your hotel and begin your Danakil Depression trip. We start driving to Hamed Ela. Upon arrival at Berehaile, the 180 km road takes you through a scenic landscape that gradually changes as you descend from the highlands of Mekelle (2,220 meters above sea level) down into the Danakil Depression, one of the lowest and hottest places on Earth.

The region is full of eye-catching landscapes that shift constantly as you travel. The Danakil Depression is one of the most inhospitable places in the world, yet it remains economically important as a source of salt. Many traditional salt miners still make a living by traversing the desert and transporting precious salt to the highlands. On the way, you may see camel caravans carrying salt across the desert.

Overnight camping in Hamed Ela.

Day 2: Dallol – Mekelle – Addis Ababa

Early in the morning, after breakfast, we drive to Ragad-Asebo to see traditional salt miners at work. Here, they break solid salt rock into rectangular salt bars, which are then loaded onto camels and transported to the highlands of Ethiopia, where farmers use them for cattle feeding.

Afterward, we continue to Dallol, located 116 meters below sea level. This extraordinary destination features an otherworldly landscape with continuous volcanic activity, creating colorful hot springs, sulfuric lakes, salt mountains, and vast salt deserts.

Drive back to Mekelle and take a flight to Addis Ababa.
