Day 1: Fly Addis Ababa – Jinka – Mursi Village

Fly from Addis Ababa to Jinka, the capital of the Omo Valley region. Our team/driver will meet you at the airport. Jinka is also home to the Ari people. According to your arrival time, we will drive out to the Mursi village.

We drive through Mago National Park to meet the Mursi. The Mursi people are considered fearless warriors. They are mostly recognized for their women’s iconic lip plates. The bigger the lip plate, the more beautiful a Mursi woman is considered.

Spend the night in the Mursi village, learning about their way of life, family structure, tribal traditions, food, drinks, and daily activities.

Day 2: Jinka – Turmi (Hamer Village)

Wake up to the sound of birds and hear the Mursi talking to each other. The women start to make a fire; although it is a cold morning for the Mursi people, you may still find it hot.

After a final morning with the Mursi people, you will be transferred to a Hamer village via Jinka.

The Hamer live around their capital, Turmi, a small settlement that can be busy on market days. The Hamer people make a living from herding and agriculture. They live in small villages and follow a largely traditional lifestyle.

The Hamers are famous for their spectacular women’s hairstyles. Hamer boys must pass through a rite of passage to become adults. The ceremony is called “Bull Jumping.” It is an impressive cultural event to witness and an important milestone in the life of a Hamer family.

Day 3: Turmi – Karo (Korcho Village)

In the morning, take a walk in the Hamer village and maybe join a family in their hut for a traditional coffee. After spending time with the Hamer tribe, visit the local market in Turmi, where many tribes come to buy and sell goods. Afterwards, enjoy a local drink.

In the afternoon, drive to Korcho village of the Karo tribe. We will set up our tent on a cliff overlooking a scenic view of the Omo River.

The Karo live in villages made of sticks with thatched roofs. The most striking feature of the Karo tribe is their practice of body painting. Many men and women decorate themselves using colorful clay soils. They are often referred to as the best body painters among the tribes of the Omo Valley.

Day 4: Karo – Omorate (Dasenech Tribe)

In the morning, we will drive to Omorate town to visit the Dasenech tribe. The Dasenech people live around the Omo River. To reach their village, we will cross to the other side of the river by a traditional boat.

The Dasenech, like other Omo Valley tribes, are constantly adapting to their ever-changing environment. They grow sorghum, maize, and beans. They are also livestock-oriented: cattle and goats provide milk and meat, especially during the dry season when food is scarce. Livestock is also a sign of status and is used as a dowry for marriage.

They have a tradition of conflict, often related to cattle raiding with neighboring tribes.

In the afternoon, return and camp in a Hamer village.
