The Mursi people are known for their strong warrior traditions and a lifestyle deeply connected to cattle. They also practice flood-retreat agriculture along the Omo River. Although often described as nomadic, they maintain a semi-settled lifestyle.

The Mursi women are famous for wearing large clay lip plates, a cultural symbol of beauty and identity. Men often decorate their bodies with paint and wear minimal clothing, especially during ceremonies.

After lunch, we continue to Turmi, passing through Key Afer and Dimeka, home to the Bena tribes. If lucky, we may experience colorful local markets on Thursdays or Saturdays.

Day 5 – Turmi – Omorate – Turmi

In the morning, we drive to Omorate, home of the Dasenech tribe. They live along the banks of the Omo River and near the Kenyan border.

Dasenech women are known for their elaborate beadwork, while men often decorate their hair with clay and feathers. After visiting and observing traditional dances, we return to Turmi.

Turmi is also home to the Hamer tribe, known for their striking appearance, including women with beautifully styled red ochre hair.

We visit a Hamer village to learn about their family structure and daily life. The Hamer depend on livestock and small-scale farming. One of their most important traditions is the Bull Jumping Ceremony, a rite of passage for young men.

We will look for an opportunity to witness this unique cultural ceremony.

Historically, they were wealthy cattle herders, but after a major livestock loss, they shifted to fishing and small-scale farming.

In the afternoon, we return to Turmi and explore local markets and Hamer villages. Monday is a market day where tribes gather to trade cattle, coffee, tobacco, honey, clothing, and more. We also look for another chance to witness a Bull Jumping ceremony.
